Understanding the US healthcare and health insurance system

November 10, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST

Are you feeling lost in your search for affordable health insurance? Do you wonder how your immigration status changes your healthcare options? Do you need help understanding how to pick the right plan? Do you know what to do if you need services that your insurance doesn't cover?

Renata Marinaro, Managing Director of Health Services at Entertainment Community Fund, will provide a basic introduction to the US health insurance system, explain variations between the different US states, and help you figure out how to find insurance where you live.

Then Kheir Mugwaneza, Program Manager at the Allegheny Health Network's Center for Inclusion Health, will talk about how to get access to health services if you are an immigrant or refugee without insurance or with inadequate coverage.

There will be plenty of time at the end for questions and answers.

This workshop is presented by the Opportunity Network for At-Risk Writers, Artists, Rights Defenders, and Scholars (ONWARDS) and supported by Cornell University’s Migrations Global Grand Challenge, part of Global Cornell, with support from the Mellon Foundation’s Just Futures Initiative. The project is coordinated by Ithaca City of Asylum, a project of the Center for Transformative Action.
